At 3142m, superb conical–shaped Agung is the highest Balinese peak and an impressive sight from anywhere in East Bali. The spiritual centre of Bali, it is believed that the spirits of the ancestors of the Balinese people dwell on Gunung Agung.
Climbing the volcano is challenging. It is at least a three–hour climb with an ascent of almost 2000 m, so you will need to set out at 3am or earlier if you want to be at the top in time to see the spectacular sunrise. This is the moment you will never forget.
The track initially passes through forest, ascending onto bare, steep rock. It doesn't go to the actual summit, but ends to a point on the rim that is about 100m lower.
It is best to do this hike in dry season, this is from April to October. |
