About 35km east of Bali at its closest point, Lombok is inevitably compared with its better known western neighbour, although it differs considerably in almost every aspect – physically, culturally, linguistically and historically.
It also contrasts quite markedly for the visitor, with lots of wide – open spaces, plenty of unspoilt beaches and less traffic.
Despite deforestation across much of Lombok, an extensive area of forest does remain on the slopes of Gunung Rinjani (3726m), and stretches for over 65km across the north of the island.
From a distance, Rinjani appears to rise in solitary glory from the plains, but in fact the entire area is a throng of soaring summits.
Invisible from below, the most breathtaking feature of the area is Danau Segara Anak (Child of the Sea), the magnificent crater-lake, measuring 8km by km.
The climb up Rinjani is the most energetic and the most rewarding trek on either Bali or Lombok. |
